She was born Chitose, the daughter of the Ó hAodha family and the Kujo family. In their bid for power, Chitose's parents attempted to summon Benzaiten, the god-ancestor of the Kujo, into her body. Soon after birth she was spirited away from the Wandering Sea to Cork in order to hide any evidence of Benzaiten's summoning.However, at the age of six, Anja manifested fire as her affinity. Her mother concluded that the summoning failed and she was to be dispensed of, although Anja's father elected to watch her more. She was recalled to the Selen Gate nine years later.At age eighteen, she was subject to a procedure that would awaken Benzaiten. Her father engraved a seed-syllable onto her back like an exit wound. At age twenty-three, she left her home in the Wandering Sea and got herself a one-way ticket to London. Seven years after that, she would return to take her vengeance.

As a former member of the Wandering Sea, Anja benefits highly from their research in body modifications, having been genetically and physically engineered to be stronger with supercharged senses, strength, speed, and healing.After recovering her memories and power as Benzaiten, she lost her ability to spontaneously set everything ablaze, including herself, but her skills in magecraft and her mana reservoir significantly improved. She is also able to call upon Benzaiten's Authority, All That Flows, to manipulate and decimate virtually any being weaker than a Divine Spirit. As with her previous Sorcery Trait, doing it is extremely dangerous and thus relegated to the very bottom of her barrel.As a god of fortune, she's able to grant wishes. As a dead god, she may need a price.

  BIRTH   She was born Chitose Kujo to Ronan Ó hAodha and Suzume Kujo. Her parents meant for her to become the vessel for Benzaiten, the Japanese goddess of water and wisdom. However, to avoid suspicion of unsanctioned summoning from their respective families, they sent her to Ronan's home country, Ireland.

  CHILDHOOD   The summoning was a success, although there was a snag: Benzaiten had no intention to take over Chitose. She was content to sleep and occasionally give Chitose knowledge of various things, leading her to grow into a very intelligent child. As Benzaiten's essence and memories as a bodhisattva seeps into Chitose, the child begins to develop a fire and healing affinity, not unlike Bhaiṣajyarāja.
Not knowing this, her mother was convinced that the summoning was a failure and attempted to kill her. She was stopped by Ronan who was intrigued by Chitose's abilities.

  TEENAGED YEARS   Chitose was recalled to the Wandering Sea at age fifteen. There, she learned the family trade: body modification, practiced in order to create a body strong enough to reach the Root. She became one of the experiments.
When Chitose was eighteen years old, her father Ronan, crumbling under the pressure of his own parents, enacted a ritual to drag Benzaiten out whether she liked it or not. However, this ritual instead killed the goddess, leaving Chitose with what's left of her memories and powers. Panicked, Chitose decided to seal the magic that killed Benzaiten and repress her memories of the event.

  ADULTHOOD   After five years of being a whipping post of her parents' frustation for not being able to summon Benzaiten and gain power in the family, Chitose left the Wandering Sea. She got herself a one-way ticket to London where she would ask the help of Sissel Marei, an Egyptian Clock Tower mage who became her mentor and eventually referred her to Chaldea. She took the name Anja from then on.
